Individuals interested in adopting a dog from MuttLove must pass a home check and submit a $100 adoption fee per dog. In the homecheck, we look for the following:
- A safe and secure environment where the dog will not be injured or escape from the property.
- All other pets in the house must be completely up-to-date on vaccines (DHPP and Rabies) and adopter must be able to provide documentation.
- We look for evidence of responsible character (existing pets are well-cared for, the home is clean and well-cared for, children are well-cared for, etc).
- We look for stability in the home. For example, homeownership and/or a stable job. If the family will be moving soon, we look for evidence that the family would be capable of and willing to move the dog with them.
- Dogs adopted from MuttLove must be indoor dogs.
- We check demeanor of the members of the household with the MuttLove dog, especially the interaction between the new dog and existing pets.
- To adopt a working dog (such as a German shepherd or husky), we look to see that the adopter has experience with such breeds and/or demonstrates maturity and patience that would be necessary to train and work with these types of dogs.
- We reserve the right to decline any adoption or remove a dog from a family post-adoption if we feel that the dog is in danger or being abused.
Foster-to-Adopt Program
To see the dogs that are ready for a foster, please see our Facebook page.
If you are interested in adopting a dog that is not quite ready for adoption, you may qualify for our Foster-to-Adopt (FTA) program. The requirements for this program are the same as the general adoption program, however, under this program, you could take custody of the dog as a temporary foster for MuttLove. Once the necessary vetting has been completed, the dog would officially transfer ownership to you. To enroll in this program, you would first put down a deposit equal to half of the adoption fee. Once the process is complete, we would collect the remaining fee. During the foster period, the dog would be a member of your family, however, we would maintain responsibility for the remaining veterinary care with you only responsible for transportation to appointments that we schedule. The amount of time typically spent enrolled in the FTA program depends on the age and medical needs of a dog. We do not spay or neuter our animals until about 12 weeks of age and we do not administer rabies vaccines until about 16 weeks of age. If there are any illnesses or injuries that we are treating the dog for, we would complete treatment up to a satisfactory point as agreed upon by you and us.
